Run Your Numbers

Rekey about $145 to $340. New deadbolts about $545 to $1,590.

Uses typical valley ranges of $20 to $50 per rekey, $100 to $300 per installed deadbolt and one visit of $45 to $90. This is arithmetic and not a quote.

Count Your Cylinders First

Walk your home with a key in your hand and write down every lock that takes a key. A front door with a knob and a deadbolt is two cylinders. Add the back door, the door from the garage, any patio slider lock and any side gate lock.

A typical Las Vegas house lands between 3 and 8. A condo or townhome is often 2 or 3.

Which Locks Cannot Be Rekeyed

A lock that is worn or damaged should be replaced. Kwikset says its SmartKey system works only with Kwikset products, cannot be master keyed and needs your current working key. If that key is lost, you need a locksmith.

More Questions

Is rekeying cheaper than new locks?

Yes, if the lock itself works. Rekeying swaps the pins so old keys stop working, usually for $20 to $50 per lock. New hardware costs more because you are buying the lock too.
